A Sansepolcro, splendida cittadina rinascimentale nel cuore dell'Italia centrale, nel 1953, la Società dei Balestrieri, portatrice della secolare tradizione del Palio della Balestra, decise di riscoprire questa antica forma di spettacolo, andando a costituire una compagine di sbandieratori.

Gli Sbandieratori di Sansepolcro, primo gruppo costituitosi in Italia, è tutt'ora il più antico tra i gruppi simili in attività.
